Executive Director’s Message

El Centrito Family Learning Centers is embarking on an “Intentional Disruption” from June 1st to October 1st, 2013, as I take a four month sabbatical that I have planned over the past eighteen months along with the Board of Directors and leadership staff. My sabbatical will include some travel, as I visit different regions of America each month, including the Midwest, Northeast coast, Northwest coast, and the Caribbean tip of Mexico. Besides travel, this sabbatical most importantly will involve rest, reflection and creative renewal.

I join seven other Nonprofit Executives from throughout California to receive The California Wellness Foundation’s (TCWF) prestigious Sabbatical Program Award. This $35,000 Sabbatical grant was received as recognition for leadership and impact El Centrito Family Learning Centers has made on strengthening the community we serve. TCWF President and CEO, Diana Bontá, remarks, “We are pleased to recognize these exemplary leaders who give so much of themselves to others and place the needs of their communities before their own.”

This sabbatical will increase the organizational capacity of El Centrito Family Learning Centers by providing an excellent opportunity to share leadership responsibilities among Board of Directors and management staff. A study produced by Compass Point, titled Creative Disruption: Sabbaticals for Capacity Building and Leadership Development in the Nonprofit Sector, states that “Creative disruption of a well-planned sabbatical can be productive for the entire leadership of an organization. Organizational capacity is increased as the second tier of leadership takes on new responsibilities, governance is strengthened....and executive directors come back rejuvenated, with a fresh vision and innovative ideas.”

In my absence, Joseph Castañeda will serve as Acting Executive Director, and will be sharing responsibilities along with a strong leadership team and the Board of Directors who are very committed to this sabbatical opportunity. I will rest, reflect, have fun, and make good use of this incredible gift and opportunity!

I look forward to returning recharged with new vision, innovative ideas, and open to new opportunities that will help strengthen and grow El Centrito Family Learning Centers.
